Having Disneyland in easy access to your convention is not a plus. If people spend time at Disneyland instead of your convention, that means your programming is lacking. Or they just really love Disneyland.
just because others find it necessary to sit around doing nothing. If you complain about how productive other members of staff are because you spend all of your free time going about your own personal pursuits, well, I have no words for you. People complaining about such things led to our chair telling us all that the event was more than a year away and that we shouldn’t be doing so much work.
So apparently being prepared and doing what you can well in advance and having it ready for any possible changes is bad. I guess these are people who continually destroy their bodies and relationships because they can’t do things in a proactive manner and instead opt for reactive measures. This shouldn’t surprise me, but it’s funny that now the usual suspects still fail to do the minimum of their jobs and continue to work on things they enjoy instead of the duties they signed up for.
Yeah, that’s exactly what we need! I think those who do actual work for this event should take a break/holiday and see what gets accomplished in the following months.
Always remember…
everyone who works at an event is replaceable. The only problem might be how hard it is to replace a person, but always treat your position the same as any other. Story time for this being how the chair for my even thought they were untouchable in their position. This was proven wrong when I challenged this notion and others stepped up to say they would want the position. Funnily enough 2 of the 3 who wanted it already had more support than the chair ever had. Funny considering this same chair said I was replaceable, but at this point finding someone to replace them would be as easy as throwing a Gundam bouquet into a room of mechheads. Just so everyone knows, I also accept fully that I can be replaced, just unlike with the chair, I actually put in work into the event so it’s highly unlikely. Same goes for many other people I work with, we all do so much that it’d be vastly harder to replace us. If anything, we’d be replaced with people who either fail to achieve anything, lack knowledge/experience, or no one likes. Sad part is that is a good chunk of what the leadership I have to deal with at the moment is like… I almost made the convention chair cry when it was proven that what I said was right.
when people who know more than you tell you something. Nothing is sillier than asking someone for help then disregarding everything they say and do because “I know better because I’ve been to events.”. Knowing how something is run and attending it are two different things.
Case in point, I might have seen open heart surgery, but do you think that same person would let me inside of their chest cavity with a pocket knife and a bottle of everclear as antiseptic because of that?
Again, this is a problem I’ve run into myself and still continue to face it due to the person running my event believing they know how everything in the world works. If this were true everything they have their hands in wouldn’t fail. I think the count is about three things I’ve seen have little to no attendance or poor planning and operators.
This is a bit new for me, so I guess I should list something. I only do this to give to other people the knowledge of some simple and not so simple things to look out for when they work/run a convention or similar type of gathering.
First and foremost, treat your attendees, guests, and staff with much respect. I know in my own case I’ve been treated like crap by those in charge of the event I help with(An anime convention) and staff lower than me. Hell, I’ve even had a chair from another convention treat me with disrespect because I didn’t answer a question the way he wanted. If anything, I don’t care if it’s a matter of pride or experience, but don’t treat people as if they are beneath you or as if they are children. You’ll only burn bridges you might need in the future, let alone word spreads fast among segments of a population that share similar interests and goals.
I know, a good deal incoherent, but I’ll try to work on that as I actually get more things in my mind straightened out to post. Or if I get others involved in this project.
